Don’t Buy A Crate Engine Until You Read This

When you’re looking for a remanufactured engine, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by all the options out there. There are many companies remanufacturing or rebuilding engines. It may seem like all these companies are the same. The truth is, there are huge differences between them.

Some firms offer rock bottom prices for remanufactured engines. It may seem like a good deal, since it’s the same product others seem to be selling. What a lot of people don’t realize is that it’s not only about the engine itself. It’s also about what the company is offering. It’s worth digging in to find out what the offering really is before you buy.

What’s the best way to narrow down your options? How do you find an engine remanufacturing company that offers the most bang for your buck? The answer is quite simple. You need to know what to look for. We’ll help you with that.

Below, you’ll find 4 important things to look for in an engine remanufacturer. A remanufacturer that offers all these things will deliver much more value than one that doesn’t.

1. A High Volume Re-Manufacturer

You want to order from a reman firm that processes a lot of engines. At Powertrain Products, we process a lot of engines. We:

  • Have the expertise and equipment to do the job the right way.
  • Magnaflux every block and head to check for microscopic cracks. We scrap cores that don’t meet our standards.
  • Stock many different engines. If it’s not in stock, we will be able to give you an accurate estimate of when it will be able to ship. A low volume reman company doesn’t really know when they are going to get a core for a certain engine.

Powertrain Products is one of the highest volume engine remanufacturing firms in the industry. We process over 3000 different engines in our facilities. We stock remanufactured engines in several different warehouses throughout the country. This allows us to cut shipping times to 1-3 days for in-stock engines. Our high volume also allows us to do things other firms can’t do. As you read on, you’ll see what we mean.

2. Sim Tested Engines

Sim Testing

Many of the companies selling reman engines have no way to sim test the engine before shipping it. So you’ll be getting an untested engine. If you have any serious problems, you’ll have to ship it back. When we sim tests an engine for you, we know it works as it should BEFORE we ship it. If we find any problems with an engine during the sim test process, we’ll simply get another engine for you. The engine with the issue is our problem, not yours. You really, really want to have your remanufactured engine sim tested before buying it.

During a sim test, a machine spins the engine at 750 rpm. This allows us to verify that all moving parts are operating as they should, and it allows us to see that the lubrication system is working correctly. This post explains more about sim testing, and how it is different from dyno testing.

3. Extensive Knowledge About Engine Builds

Engine knowledge

Many of the companies rebuilding engines simply rebuild the engine to the original spec. This means that the original design flaws in an engine are simply recreated. At Powertrain Products, we correct the original design flaws wherever possible. For example:

  • Many Ford V-8’s with aluminum heads are known for having a spark plug ejection problem. We remedy this in every engine known to have the problem.
  • 5.7L Hemi engines are known for having valve seats that disintegrate over time. Valve seat debris ends up in the intake manifold, which is almost impossible to thoroughly clean out. We use updated valve seats when we rebuild these engines. And, we’ve sourced a screened intake manifold gasket that allows the owner to reuse the intake manifold without worrying about the debris causing problems.
  • Early versions of the Ford 5.4L V8’s had cam phaser issues. Instead of using the original cam phaser, we use the lastest generation of cam phaser.

There are too many “known design flaws” to list them all. If you’re concerned about a design flaw in the engine you are replacing, call our sales line. One of our reps will be able let you know what we do to remedy the issue.

4. The Industry’s Best Warranty
